All MEMOS XXIX students must conduct an individual project during their study year (August 2026 – September 2027). In principle, their project deals with the management of, and performance improvement in, the student’s sport organization, including current challenges encountered by their organization. The project topic must be discussed with the sport organization and specified in the candidature form.
Each student is assigned a tutor who coaches them throughout the programme. Between the in-person sessions, tutees and tutors maintain close contact by e-mail and tele/video conference (e.g., telephone, Skype, WhatsApp, Zoom, or MS Teams). The project topic is expected to be fully confirmed at the end of the first Session.
To complement the learnings from the three sessions, there is a set of mini courses on athlete safeguarding, preventing competition manipulation, GenAI, and the Olympic Values to be undertaken during the study year, and certificates of completion must be submitted before completing the programme to qualify for the university certificate. On successful completion of MEMOS, students are awarded a university certificate. MEMOS is not a recognized research master’s degree and therefore may not lead to a PhD program.

Contenu

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
The participant should work or volunteer for a sport organisation.
The participant must demonstrate a significant experience in managing a sport organisation.
The participants must hold a relevant university degree or have comparable professional experience as judged by the MEMOS selection committee.
The participants should be endorsed by their NOC and/or by their sport organisation, which should provide them with the necessary support to allow them to undertake this programme because it will require a high degree of personal and institutional commitment. The participant’s organisation should view their participation in MEMOS as an investment: in addition to improving the participant’s knowledge and skills, MEMOS offers a unique opportunity for the development of a project under the supervision of an experienced tutor, which should directly benefit the participant’s organisation. It is strongly recommended that a mentor be identified in the NOC/sport organisation who will directly support the individual through their MEMOS program and especially the project.
Program participants and their organisations are strongly encouraged to discuss and agree on an appropriate MEMOS project before admission.
PRACTICAL
Format
MEMOS is an executive master’s university certificate offered in 3 versions according to the teaching language: English, French and Spanish.
The English program is based on four face-to-face education and training sessions. It will allow you to implement your newly acquired knowledge directly into your organisation.
MEMOS is scheduled over 13 months and consists of three residential Sessions of 7 to 10 days. Each Session is dedicated to one or two main subjects termed Modules.
A scholar and a professional, who are experts in the subject matter, oversee each Module. Each Session begins with online asynchronous activities (lecture videos, readings, pre-module assignments) equivalent to 8 hours of learner engagement, using the University of Ottawa’s Brightspace platform.
The participants also undertake a research project concerning the management of a sport organisation, in principle the one in which they are active. During each Session, one to three days are dedicated to participants’ coaching by tutors on their projects.
A 2-day final session is devoted to the defence and presentation of participants’ personal research project, as well as the awarding of the university certificate. This final Session usually takes place in Lausanne, Switzerland or Olympia, Greece; while the second and the third Sessions are organised in different cities.
Teaching
Teaching is carried out in the respective language of each MEMOS version by an international team of university professors and practitioners, called the Module leaders.
An academic tutor is assigned to each participant to coach them through their project. By working on their research project, participants explore a particular question or problem involving their sport organisation.
Module leaders use various means of adult education (lectures, discussions, teamwork, conferences, multimedia presentation, etc.) to link course material to participants’ professional activities. Module leaders also use the University of Ottawa’s Brightspace platform for each Module’s management.
Participants, Module leaders, and tutors maintain regular contact between Modules, in particular to work on the projects.
Total time commitment: about 261 classroom hours over 29 days + 813 independent hours.
Cost
The tuition fee is 7,500 USD, plus travel and accommodation expenses for the four Modules. The accommodation costs are kept to a minimum by lodging the participants, Module leaders, and tutors as a group in each city.
These costs can be covered partly by the participant’s sport organisations (scholarships, reimbursement, continuing education schemes, etc.).
Olympic Solidarity covers the tuition fee and provides a participation subsidy for admitted candidates who are supported by their NOC (National Olympic Committee) and who have been selected to receive an Olympic Solidarity MEMOS Scholarship.
Language
The participants must have a very good written and spoken command of the teaching language. A telephone interview may be organised before the admission of candidates. It is desirable for participants to understand the two official languages of the Olympic Movement (French and English).
Evaluation
Participants are assessed based on their active participation in each Module through individual and group evaluations. They are also assessed based on the preparation of a report on their project integrating the notions presented in the first three Modules. This report is defended in front of a jury made up of the professors of the participating institutions and publicly presented in Lausanne.
The university certificate is awarded by the University of Ottawa (English and French versions) and the Universitat de Lleida, Spain (Spanish version).
